Start with the purpose of the referral

A nephrologist is a physician specialising in kidney care. The NIDDK kidney-care guide explains that a primary clinician may refer patients with complicated, worsening, or advanced kidney disease. A referral does not itself mean that dialysis is required; ask the referring doctor what question the specialist needs to address.

When contacting a clinic, describe the appointment simply: a first kidney assessment, review of an existing diagnosis, follow-up after hospital discharge, or transfer of established care. You do not need to interpret your laboratory results for the receptionist.

Match the doctor to the patient and location

The Philippine Society of Nephrology member directory offers searches by name or location and distinguishes adult from paediatric nephrology. Use it alongside hospital information and PDL profiles when building a shortlist. Confirm the patient's age group and the doctor's current consultation branch directly.

Start with a city you can return to. If a referral takes you outside your province, ask whether the first assessment and later reviews must be in person. A hospital affiliation, society entry, or directory profile does not establish an available appointment.

Separate consultation, testing, and dialysis bookings

Be specific about the service you want. A dialysis centre's contact number may lead to treatment scheduling rather than the nephrologist's outpatient secretary. Ask who handles consultations and where they take place. For an established dialysis patient arranging care elsewhere, contact the current clinical team and receiving centre early about the transfer process; a directory listing cannot confirm a treatment slot.

If tests are already ordered, ask whether they need to be completed before the visit, where results should be sent, and whether the doctor needs images as well as written reports. Let the treating team decide which investigations are needed.

Make a compact record pack

Arrange existing kidney-related results by date, with the newest on top. Include the referral, relevant discharge summary, current prescriptions, and any monitoring record your clinician has already asked you to keep. Label documents from different hospitals clearly rather than merging results without dates.

NIDDK recommends bringing medicine and supplement information and writing down questions. Include non-prescription products in that list. If you are unsure of a product's name, bring its packaging or a clear label photograph. Ask the clinic for its secure document channel instead of posting results publicly.

Useful questions for the consultation

  • What is the main issue you are assessing, and what information is still missing?
  • Who will explain any new results, and how will I receive those instructions?
  • Which doctor should coordinate my care if I also attend other specialty clinics?
  • What changes should prompt me to contact the clinic sooner, and where should I seek urgent help?
  • When should I return, and what should I bring to that appointment?

Plan the practical follow-through

Confirm the consultation fee, accepted payment methods, and any HMO referral or approval requirements for the exact doctor and branch. Ask whether follow-up review is charged separately. Before leaving, record the next appointment and responsible contact so a pending result is not mistaken for a completed review.

Explore nephrologists across the Philippines, then check each practice's published sources and confirm arrangements directly.

Sources and scope

Sources checked on 25 October 2026: the Philippine Society of Nephrology directory and NIDDK guidance linked above. This guide helps organise a consultation; it does not diagnose kidney disease or prescribe tests, medicines, diet, or fluid intake. Follow individual instructions from your treating team.

About Philippines Doctors Listing

Philippines Doctors Listing is a growing healthcare directory designed to help patients explore doctors and clinics across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Listings focus on professional information, practice locations, specialties, and published ways to contact clinics.

Directory information can change. Confirm schedules, services, and appointment availability directly with the clinic before visiting.
